5/13/2023 0 Comments The listener robert mccammon![]() ![]() This gritty depression-era crime thriller is a complex tale enriched by powerfully observed social commentary and hints of the supernatural, and it represents Robert McCammon writing at the very top of his game. One day, Curtis Mayhew’s special talent allows him to overhear a child’s cry for help ( THIS MAN IN THE CAR HE’S GOT A GUN), which draws him into the dangerous world of Partlow and LaFrance. ![]() What those friends don’t know is that Curtis has a special talent for listening… and he can sometimes hear things that aren’t spoken aloud. In a different part of town, Curtis Mayhew, a young black man who works as a redcap for the Union Railroad Station, has a reputation for mending quarrels and misunderstandings among his friends. Joining together they leave their small time confidence scams behind to attempt an elaborate kidnapping-for-ransom scheme in New Orleans. Angel-faced John Partlow and carnival huckster Ginger LaFrance are among the worst of this lot. In the midst of this misery, some folks explored unscrupulous ways to make money. Businesses went under by the hundreds, debt and foreclosures boomed, and breadlines grew in many American cities.

5/13/2023 0 Comments Elena ferrante neapolitan novels![]() By the time we reach “The Story of the Lost Child,” the fourth and final installment of the Neapolitan series, we have arrived at the 21st century and Elena, its narrator, is growing old. Ferrante gives us both the long answer and the short, and in doing so adumbrates the mysterious beauty and brutality of personal experience.įerrante is the by now famously anonymous Italian novelist whose works started appearing in 1992, though their setting is the Naples of the 1950s onward. “Do you want the long answer or the short?” is the customary divide between explanations versus outcomes in the retelling of events. That these two modes of storytelling - the compact and the commodious the modern and the historical the distilling of life into metaphor and its picaresque, riotous expansion - are so obviously the obverse of each other constitutes yet another narrative, the story of how an individual (more specifically, a woman) arrives, after the vicissitudes of living, at a definition of self. ![]() Elena Ferrante has written her story twice: once in a group of intense, highly modeled short novels whose action unfolds over a brief time span and again in the four sprawling, rambunctious, decades-spanning works that compose her Neapolitan saga. ![]() ![]() ![]() Try honestly to see things from the other person’s point of view.īe sympathetic with the other person’s ideas and desires.īegin with praise and honest appreciation.Ĭall attention to people’s mistakes indirectly. ![]() Let the other person feel that the idea is his or hers. I don’t have time to reread favourite books anymore, now that there are so many to choose from. Who better than Abby Craden to voice MFN? For the nerd that I can’t help being, the fact that it was released on 2.22.22 simply added to the perfection that I knew this would be. When the author announced that Abby Craden would be narrating, the impatience went through the roof. That exhilarating feeling I felt last summer when I first read The Headmistress? It came back tenfold with the audiobook. ![]() 5/12/2023 0 Comments Animorphs the visitor![]() ![]() As the series goes on, every book features our young heroes taking on bigger challenges with more and more devastating consequences, but here, the mission is small, and Rachel's goals even smaller. It's weird that what struck me the most about this second book in the series after reading it for the first time in lo these many years is how small everything feels. I might end up reading more from the series one day because the book left off on a cliffhanger and I really want to know what happens. I wasn’t expecting much as I figured I was probably an easily impressed kid who thought every book was amazing, but was I wrong! I actually felt invested in the characters (even though I didn’t start with the first book.) There were some fun and tense scenes and the lore is something you have to get comfortable with after a while, but it was entertaining! I’m slightly embarrassed to admit this but I actually had a blast reading this. ![]() This is a 90’s book so the references and slang date themselves at times, but if nothing else I got a good chuckle out of it. ![]() And it’s particularly special because it came out on my 7th birthday. This book in this series is one of those. ![]() □Īfter reading a Goosebumps book this past fall for old time’s sake and because of Halloween, I realized how much fun it was to take a trip down memory lane and decided to pick up another book from my youth. ![]() 5/12/2023 0 Comments Rhythm of war sanderson![]() ![]() ![]() I have read that Brandon describes writing a storm-light book as a huge team effort. The two chapters at the end are too late. No rest stops to catch your breath or reflect. For me, where it goes wrong, is in the no relief on the way down. ![]() I am sure many will say, wow that's great story telling! The author is taking the reader on the loss of hope downward spiral, 'with' the books characters. ![]() For me it was almost too much effort to keep going. I understand the nature of 'things get worst', but the way this is executed in this book, is excruciating and unrelenting. The story unfolds as a constant, heavy, downward GRIND. The issue for me is, there is no relief for the reader. There is nothing wrong with the story itself, it fits into the expected framework - In the overall construct of the full epic, this book slots into the journey as the 'things get worse' section, As usual, the picture painting is a wonderful backdrop, for characters which are full of life. I suspect that in years to come, the publishers will be clearly able to identify this book as the exit point, for all but the most avid fans. I doubt I will persist with the rest of the series, which is a genuinely disappointing outcome. Unfortunately, I was glad when this one was finally over. I even went back and read Oathbringer to make sure I was up to speed. I have been looking forward to this book for so long. ![]() 5/12/2023 0 Comments Moon awakening lucy monroe![]() Greek's Last Redemption (By:Caitlin Crews) Virgin's Sweet Rebellion (By:Kate Hewitt) Princess's Secret Baby (By:Carol Marinelli) The Italian's Future Bride (By:Michelle Reid)ĭelucca's Marriage Contract (By:Abby Green) The Italian Millionaire's Virgin Wife (By:Diana Hamilton) The Italian's Convenient Wife (By:Catherine Spencer) The Italian's Forced Bride (By:Kate Walker) The Italian's Marriage Demand (By:Diana Hamilton) The Italian's Stolen Bride (By:Emma Darcy) The Count's Blackmail Bargain (By:Sara Craven) The Italian's Token Wife (By:Julia James) ![]() His Inherited Bride (By:Jacqueline Baird) The Italian's Marriage Bargain (By:Carol Marinelli) The Marchese's Love Child (By:Sara Craven) Ruthless Tycoon, Innocent Wife (By:Helen Brooks)īedded at His Convenience (By:Margaret Mayo) Ruthlessly Bedded by the Italian Billionaire (By:Emma Darcy) The Italian's Bought Bride (By:Kate Hewitt) The Ruthless Marriage Proposal (By:Miranda Lee) The Millionaire's Inexperienced Love-Slave (By:Miranda Lee) Innocent on Her Wedding Night (By:Sara Craven)īought for Revenge, Bedded for Pleasure (By:Emma Darcy) Pleasured in the Billionaire's Bed (By:Miranda Lee) The Billionaire's Captive Bride (By:Emma Darcy) Hollywood Husband, Contract Wife (By:Jane Porter) ![]() Wanted: Mistress and Mother (By:Carol Marinelli)Īt the Spaniard's Convenience (By:Margaret Mayo) The Billionaire Boss's Forbidden Mistress (By:Miranda Lee) ![]() The High-Society Wife (By:Helen Bianchin) ![]() |
